Uncontrol: Abstract Works

Abstraction began for me as a way of interpreting music visually. At times, I have a very specific form in mind, similar to illustration. I later chose a more stream of consciousness process, working improvisationally, responding directly to feelings, non-objectively. Then, I might take license with the forms. I've begun making use of this approach, and I identify this mode of thought as 'uncontrol' in that I let go of conscious control to allow the unconscious to search. I've concentrated on developing the ability to switch or cue modes, navigate, and connect different levels of awareness and focus, and better understand how memory works. One particular attribute of most of the digital paintings is that I sharpen the details at multiple resolutions such that the details hold up during any level of viewing and consider how they relate to the overall form.

Through the process, I've become interested in whether how one perceives information has a direct impact on the level of conscious awareness in which information is stored. For example, I think of having 'peripheral awareness' of information due to aquisition of information through peripheral vision or more plausibly through peripheral attention. Therefore, one method of creating a complete model of awareness is to develop the visualization from multiple levels of focus or attention. The process of creating such models becomes an exercise in 'multi-focus', and may also serve as a tool for discussing and recognizing methods of focus. I am also interested in how our attention level and conscious intention affects performance, and learning how to make use of reduced or distracted attention states to improve performance or blend intentions.
