-Return to Elements Gallery- Note: Mouse-over the image to compare the final image to the original source. The two images are slightly different in proportion. I was contacted by a concert pianist, Damon Denton, about creating a flyer for a local concert. He showed me several images- a really formal b/w head shot of himself in a tux, an expressionist painting of a piano, and the photo revealed in the mouse-over, above. I sensed that he was most attracted to the mood and sky of both the painting and the city photo, and that he wanted to convey himself more in this moody context, so I chose to focus on the roof top photo. The shot was taken with a friend in the scene, so I thought to crop out the friend at first and keep it simple. I soon recognized that it was possible to eliminate the friend entirely and salvage the details of the city and sky which contributed to the overall feel of the scene, taking license using the random factor to fill in some buildings. Obviously, those who would see the flyer wouldn't be looking for tell-tale signs of image manipulation, but I thought it would be worthwhile to produce an image that stands on its own. Once text was laid over the image, the manipulation was beyond suspicion. |
